America's 250th around the Klamath Basin

In this guide

This year's Independence Day carries extra weight. It marks America's 250th anniversary, and Klamath County organizations are treating it as a milestone with celebrations stretched throughout the day.

    Klamath Falls

The anchor is the Klamath Falls 4th of July Parade at 10 a.m. down Main Street, organized in past years by the Klamath Falls Downtown Association and the Klamath Freedom Celebration. Historically the route lines up along Spring Street and runs down Main, finishing near Veterans Memorial Park, and Main Street closes to traffic during the procession. If you want a good viewing spot, the stretch from the Klamath County Museum down Main has been the traditional prime real estate.

The centerpiece this year is at Veterans Memorial Park. From 4–11 p.m., the America's 250th Anniversary Celebration / Klamath Freedom Days brings food vendors, live music, family games, and, fittingly for the semiquincentennial, Civil War cannon demonstrations. The night caps with fireworks over Lake Ewauna at roughly 10 p.m. This is the big communal gathering, and the park's location at the south end of downtown makes it walkable from the parade route, so a lot of families make a full day of it.

Over at the Klamath County Fairgrounds, MPH Diesel presents Klamath Truck Fest, a pickup and big rig show running July 4th from noon "to when the party ends." Expect drag racing, burnouts, food and beer, bounce houses, and kids activities. It's a non-profit benefit for IYS and the children of Klamath, making it an easy daytime add for families before the evening fireworks.

Please note that Klamath Trust Fest was rescheduled for a later date in August

    Firework Viewing Around Town

Veterans Memorial Park is the host site and closest vantage point, right on the north shore of Lake Ewauna where the barge launches. You'll get the fireworks plus the festival atmosphere, food vendors, and live music, though it's also where the crowds and parking crunch will be heaviest, so arrive early.

The Wing Watchers Nature Trail runs along Lake Ewauna and gives you a more relaxed lakeside view away from the thickest crowds. It's part of the roughly five miles of connected city trails, so it's an easy walk from downtown.

The Link River Nature Trail, which follows the historic Link River toward the north end near where Lake Ewauna meets the Upper Klamath system, is another quieter option for readers who'd rather skip the park congestion.

Moore Park and the Ridgeview Trail sit on higher ground on the west side overlooking Upper Klamath Lake. These give a more elevated, panoramic vantage, though keep in mind they face the big lake rather than sitting right over the Lake Ewauna launch site, so the view of the show itself will be more distant. Good for anyone wanting a picnic-and-a-view setup with room to spread out.

Around the Basin & In the Mountains

The outlying communities do it their own way. Malin runs arguably the most complete small-town celebration: a community breakfast (8–10 a.m.), its own parade, a car show (noon–3:30 p.m.), open swim at the community pool, and fireworks at dusk in the park.

Chiloquin is hosting a parade, BBQ, and free train ride.

Dorris is hosting a parade & BBQ.

Up in the mountains, Diamond Lake Resort leans into a family feel with a 10 a.m. bicycle parade, BBQ and activities through the day, and fireworks over the lake around 10–10:15 p.m.

Lake of the Woods traditionally pairs a Roadsters BBQ with an after-dark show from 4–8 p.m.

    Practical notes for readers

Fireworks times are always weather- and fire-restriction-dependent in this region, so a "permitting" caveat is smart to include in anything you publish. For the resort celebrations at Lake of the Woods and Diamond Lake, reservations are recommended and worth booking ahead. And with the parade closing Main Street, anyone heading downtown Saturday morning should plan for road closures and arrive early for parking.
